Red Bull Ventures Joins Apex Capital’s Athlete-Led Fund
Red Bull Ventures, the newly created investment arm of Red Bull, has joined Apex Capital’s Elite Performance Fund (EPF) as a cornerstone limited partner. The fund, launched in 2023 with €50 million, is distinctive in being backed primarily by athletes rather than traditional institutions, and targets startups in sports, performance, and health. This partnership underscores Red Bull’s transition from being primarily a sponsor and team owner into a direct venture investor, with the aim of aligning its global sports portfolio with early-stage innovation.
For Red Bull, established in April 2025 under the leadership of Nai-Tseng Chen and Sabrina Jones, the move represents a strategic pivot beyond initiatives like Red Bull Basement, which focused on mentorship. Through EPF, the company gains access to startups such as ScorePlay, Hexis, Samphire Neuroscience, and TMRW Sports, alongside the endorsement of over 100 athlete-investors including Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and several Formula 1 drivers. This model not only pools athlete-driven capital but also provides natural testing grounds across Red Bull’s network of football clubs, cycling teams, and F1 sponsorships.
The investment signals broader shifts in the sports business landscape. Athletes are increasingly shifting from brand ambassadors to equity holders, while brands like Red Bull are positioning themselves as capital allocators in performance-focused sectors. Apex’s emphasis on sports tech, wellness, and AI-driven performance aligns with Red Bull’s global ambitions, creating synergies between innovation, investment, and activation. While the financial details of Red Bull’s stake were not disclosed, its cornerstone role suggests a deepening integration of venture capital, athlete influence, and corporate sports ecosystems that could redefine growth pathways for the industry.
