Space Startup Apex Hits Unicorn Status Amid Defense Demand

Apex Space has become one of the latest entrants in the U.S. space sector to reach unicorn status, closing a $200 million Series D funding round that lifted its valuation to $1 billion. The round was led by Interlagos, a venture capital firm launched by former senior finance leaders from SpaceX, with continued support from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Point72 Ventures, and 8VC.

Founded in 2022, the Los Angeles-based company specializes in building satellite buses — modular spacecraft platforms designed to carry a range of payloads for both commercial and government clients. These include Earth-imaging instruments and sensors capable of tracking missile activity, reflecting the dual-use nature of today’s satellite technology.

With the new capital, Apex plans to boost its production capacity by 50% and more than double the size of its manufacturing facilities. That acceleration comes at a moment when the U.S. defense sector is seeking faster, more scalable ways to put spacecraft into orbit, shifting away from the slower, costlier legacy models that have long defined the industry.

The company’s rise underscores how startups are stepping into the center of a rapidly changing space economy. With geopolitical tensions fueling demand for national security systems in orbit, Apex is positioning itself as a supplier of agile, high-volume spacecraft production — a capability likely to play an increasing role in both defense and commercial markets.
