From Stealth to $150M: Baseten Quietly Becomes the Backbone of AI Apps

Baseten has just closed a $150 million Series D round led by BOND at a $2.15 billion valuation , nearly three times its valuation six months earlier after its Series C. The round drew in heavyweights such as CapitalG, Premji, Scribble, and existing backers including Conviction, IVP, Spark, and Greylock. This brings total funding raised by the company to over $285 million .

In the past year, Baseten has grown revenue by 10× , powered by surging demand from AI‑based applications. Their customers—companies like Abridge, Clay, OpenEvidence, Writer—are scaling fast and require inference infrastructure that delivers low latency, high throughput, uptime, and cost predictability.

Baseten pitches itself as the “inference stack” for the AI app layer. They offer tools and infrastructure that let companies deploy, monitor, and scale AI models with performance optimizations (e.g. latency, parallelism, reliability) rather than just raw capacity. They’ve also launched Model APIs and enhanced training infrastructure, enabling fine‑tuning, customization, and better engineer ergonomics.

This valuation boost and large raise show that investors see inference as one of the fastest‑growing bottlenecks in AI. But with high growth comes pressure: Baseten must deliver on performance and reliability at scale, manage infrastructure costs aggressively, and stay ahead of competition from cloud providers and other inference‑specialized platforms. If they succeed, Baseten could become foundational to many AI products; if not, rising costs or reliability issues could erode trust quickly.
