Magnetar’s Big AI Bet Brings Huge Gains — and Big Questions
Magnetar, a hedge fund best known for its contrarian bets during the 2008 financial crisis, has become one of 2025’s standout performers after making an aggressive move into artificial intelligence.
The firm, which typically operates quietly and avoids the spotlight, has seen its returns surge to about 56% this year thanks largely to a bold wager on CoreWeave, a fast-growing AI data center operator. What began as a series of loans has ballooned into Magnetar’s largest position, representing nearly half its assets. At its peak, the stake was valued at more than $11 billion.
CoreWeave shares have soared since going public in March, fueled by strong demand for AI infrastructure, but their volatility has raised concerns among investors. Magnetar has started trimming its stake and using options to hedge, though completely exiting without denting the stock’s price may prove difficult.
The hedge fund’s concentrated bet reflects a broader shift in global markets: AI is no longer just a niche theme for technology specialists, but a central force shaping investment strategies across industries. For Magnetar, traditionally focused on niche credit deals, the move underscores both the opportunity and the risk of aligning so heavily with a single sector.
While the success has impressed investors, questions remain about the fund’s future direction — whether it will return to its structured credit roots or continue leaning into high-stakes technology plays. Either way, Magnetar’s gamble shows how AI is reshaping not just industries, but the very strategies of modern finance.
