Earthshot Prize Highlights Gazelle’s Floating Wind Technology
Portuguese company Gazelle Wind Power is making strides in renewable energy with its innovative floating wind technology . The company recently received a 10-year TUPEM authorization from Portuguese authorities to deploy its 2 MW demonstrator platform, “Nau Azul,” off the coast of Aguçadoura, Portugal , a key step in testing floating wind systems under real ocean conditions.
The Nau Azul platform is engineered to operate efficiently in Portugal’s challenging offshore environment. Its unique counterweight-based mooring system reduces movement, minimizes environmental impact, and lowers the overall cost of energy, demonstrating that floating wind can be a practical and cost-effective solution for offshore renewable energy.
Beyond its technological impact, the project is expected to bring economic benefits to the region, creating jobs across the local supply chain. It also strengthens Portugal’s leadership in offshore renewable innovation and supports Europe’s broader clean energy goals. In recognition of its contributions, Gazelle Wind Power Limited has been nominated for the Earthshot Prize in the “Fix Our Climate” category by The Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, a prestigious award recognizing companies whose solutions deliver tangible environmental benefits.
The nomination underscores Gazelle’s role in advancing offshore renewable energy , promoting sustainability, and proving the viability of floating wind technology as a key component of Europe’s energy transition.
