Alexander Gerko: Building a Quantitative Trading Titan from London
Alexander Gerko, a Russian-born mathematician turned British billionaire, transformed a small team of quantitative traders into one of the UK’s most profitable private companies. With a PhD in mathematics from Moscow and early experience at Deutsche Bank and GSA Capital, Gerko identified a shift in financial markets after the 2008 crisis: proprietary trading was moving from large banks to specialized, tech-driven firms. Seizing this opportunity, he spun out XTX Markets in 2015, leveraging machine learning, advanced algorithms, and high-performance computing to provide liquidity across foreign exchange, equities, fixed income, commodities, and crypto markets.
Gerko’s approach set XTX apart from traditional high-frequency trading firms. Rather than competing solely on speed, the firm prioritizes massive data analysis and AI-driven pricing models. Operating a supercomputer in Iceland and running tens of thousands of Nvidia AI chips, XTX scans trillions of market data points daily, ensuring competitive pricing for institutional clients. This technology-centric model allowed Gerko and his team to scale quickly, handling hundreds of billions of dollars in trades every day while keeping a relatively lean staff of around 250 employees.
Beyond his business success, Gerko is known for his outsized influence in the firm and a unique personal style. Retaining roughly 75% ownership of XTX, he has become one of the UK’s wealthiest individuals, earning hundreds of millions annually from the company’s profits. He has invested in AI startups and philanthropic initiatives, notably founding Axiom Maths to support advanced math education. His life combines intense focus on technology and trading with personal passions, from elaborate office displays inspired by space exploration to his family office named after a sci-fi reference. Today, Gerko continues to push the boundaries of quantitative trading, aiming to outcompete rivals like Citadel and Renaissance Technologies while maintaining strict control over his company’s vision and strategy.
