Ion Stoica’s Billion-Dollar Classroom Legacy
Ion Stoica, cofounder of Databricks and Anyscale, has built a career that straddles academia and entrepreneurship, becoming a billionaire while never leaving the classroom. Now 60, Stoica was born in communist Romania and came to the U.S. in the late 1990s to pursue a PhD at Carnegie Mellon before joining UC Berkeley in 2000. Over nearly three decades, he has mentored more than 80 PhD students, many of whom became professors or founders, and continues to teach undergraduates while leading research in distributed systems and AI.

Despite his success, Stoica insists money was never the motivation. He stepped down as Databricks’ CEO to remain at Berkeley, emphasizing that his passion lies in mentoring students and advancing open-source research. As chair of a task force addressing funding cuts, he advocates for private partnerships to sustain innovation across campus. Stoica sees AI not as a threat but as a catalyst for progress, urging students to embrace it as part of humanity’s broader journey toward accelerated evolution and, eventually, interplanetary life.
