Perplexity AI’s bold browser ambitions: from Brave to Chrome

Perplexity AI has made headlines with a series of audacious moves to extend its reach beyond AI search into web navigation itself. After reports surfaced of a $1 billion offer for Brave , the privacy-focused browser, the company followed up with a speculative $34.5 billion all-cash bid for Google Chrome —despite no indication that Google intends to sell.

The offers reveal a company intent on embedding its technology deeper into the internet’s daily workflow. Owning a browser would give Perplexity direct access to how billions of users experience the web, turning its AI from a search complement into a default gateway. In theory, Brave would provide a foothold with privacy-minded users, while Chrome—used by over three billion people—would vault Perplexity to global distribution overnight.

The Chrome proposal included promises to keep Chromium open-source, invest $3 billion in development, and retain Google as the default search engine. That framing positions the bid less as a hostile takeover and more as a regulatory-friendly alternative—an unusual stance for a startup valued around $20 billion to take toward one of the world’s most valuable digital assets.

Sceptics see the bids as more theatre than strategy: attention-grabbing moves designed to elevate Perplexity’s profile as AI reshapes the search and browser markets. Yet, even if no deal materialises, the message is clear. Perplexity is not content to remain an AI overlay. It wants to compete for control of the internet’s entry points, setting the stage for a future where browsing and AI search converge into a single, contested battleground. According to Battery Ventures, the company reached $200 million in revenue in 2025.
