Chamath-backed Rare-Earth Mine Gains Momentum
MP Materials, the operator of the only rare-earth mine in the United States, is enjoying a surge in both operational performance and market confidence. The company’s shares have climbed on the back of two significant developments: a smaller-than-expected second-quarter loss and the announcement of a $150 million loan from the U.S. Department of DefenseDealroom has a profile for this one. The latest quarterly results showed a substantial boost in production. Output of neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) — critical for electronics, renewable energy systems, and defense applications — jumped 119% to a record 597 metric tons. Looking ahead, the company expects production to rise a further 10–20% in the next quarter, reflecting its strong growth momentum.
The $150 million DOD loan will be used to enhance heavy rare-earth separation capabilities at the Mountain Pass facility, a key step in strengthening the U.S. supply chain for critical minerals. This follows an earlier strategic agreement with the Pentagon, which established a price floor for NdPr products and made the Department of Defense MP Materials’ largest shareholder.
Adding to the company’s growth prospects, a $500 million supply contract with Apple will support the production of rare-earth magnets and fund expansion at the Independence mine in Texas. These combined efforts are positioning MP Materials as a cornerstone of the U.S. strategy to secure a stable, domestic source of rare-earth elements — vital to industries ranging from consumer technology to national defense.
With increased production capacity, significant government backing, and high-profile commercial partnerships, MP Materials is entering a new phase of growth that could shape the future of rare-earth supply in the United States.
