Meril exemplifies the Global South’s rise in medical technology

Meril, one of India’s leading medical device manufacturers, has raised $200 million to expand its production capacity and global presence. The company aims to bring its technologies — such as stents, heart valves, and orthopedic implants — to more hospitals worldwide.

Founded in 2006, Meril has built a portfolio focused on complex cardiovascular solutions like coronary stents and transcatheter heart valves (TAVI), as well as orthopedic products and diagnostic kits. The entire process — from design and research to manufacturing — is done in-house. Today, the company holds regulatory approvals from the US and Europe, enabling it to compete in demanding global markets.

This new funding, which values Meril at approximately $6.6 billion, highlights India’s growing strength as an exporter of medical technology. With products already used in over 100 countries, Meril represents a new generation of Global South manufacturers — more affordable, agile, and ready to challenge traditional industry giants.
