Eli Lilly bets $1.3B on Verve’s single-shot heart therapy platform

Eli Lilly is doubling down on genomic medicine with its $1.3 billion acquisition of Verve Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotech specializing in gene editing for cardiovascular diseases. The deal gives Lilly access to Verve’s base editing platform, which aims to offer single-treatment therapies for genetically driven heart conditions.

Based in Boston, Verve was founded in 2018 by a team of cardiovascular researchers and geneticists. The company has since gained attention for its work on atherosclerosis and familial hypercholesterolemia, aiming to permanently silence disease-causing genes. Backed by major healthcare investors, Verve has been a front-runner in next-gen CRISPR technologies, especially in the emerging field of base editing.

For Lilly, the acquisition expands its presence in precision therapies and reflects a broader shift in big pharma toward one-time treatments over chronic medications. It’s also a signal that despite biotech volatility, strategic buyers are still pursuing transformative science at scale.
