Annual venture capital

Funding into European deep tech startups has grown nearly tenfold over the past five years, reaching $20.3B in 2025. With $23.5B raised in the first 6 months of 2026, the full year is on track to land at $47.0B, a +131% change versus 2025. The chart below shows annual funding totals; the latest year is annualised from observed-to-date data and represents the renderer's projection, not a closed quarter.

Quarterly venture capital

Yearly totals mask the quarter-by-quarter rhythm. The chart below shows European deep tech startups funding raised in each of the last 21 complete quarters through Q2 2026. All bars are actual closed-quarter sums, no projections, no in-progress quarters.

How deep tech funding splits

Deep tech spans the foundational hardware and science that other industries build on, from computing and materials to the machines that act in the physical world. Capital intensity and timelines differ sharply across these, so a single total hides several distinct markets.

Computing and connectivity

Semiconductors, photonics, quantum computing and next-generation networking. The most capital-intensive and strategically contested layer, increasingly shaped by industrial policy, sovereignty concerns and the compute demands of AI.

Robotics, machines and autonomy

Robotics, drones, autonomous systems and the sensing and control software underneath them. A broad hardware layer where Europe has deep engineering and industrial heritage and a growing set of venture-backed manufacturers.

Materials, energy and the physical sciences

Advanced and novel materials, nanotech, fusion and other physics-driven bets. The longest-horizon layer, often spun out of national research institutes, and where much of the new climate and dual-use capital is concentrating.

Europe's share of global deep tech investment

European deep tech's share of global deep tech venture capital tracks how much of global deep tech's startup capital lands in this market. In 2016, European deep tech startups accounted for 19.5% of global deep tech VC funding; by 2026 the share had reached 6.6%. The chart below splits each year's total global deep tech VC funding into European deep tech on the bottom and the rest of the market on top.

European deep tech venture capital raised by stage

How capital deployed into European deep tech startups is split across round sizes. In the trailing four quarters, 68% of capital landed in scaleup ($100M+) rounds, 23% in breakout ($15–100M), and 10% across startups (under $15M). Each panel below stacks the canonical sub-bands across Q2 2022 → Q2 2026.

Where European deep tech is built

European deep tech venture capital concentrates in a handful of national ecosystems, each shaped by its industrial base, research institutions and defence demand.

France, Germany and the UK

The three largest European deep tech ecosystems. France pairs strong research labs with venture-backed quantum and semiconductor companies; Germany anchors robotics, photonics and industrial deep tech; and the UK leads in computing, AI hardware and a dense university spinout pipeline.

The Netherlands, Switzerland and the Nordics

A fast-growing second tier punching above its weight. The Netherlands anchors the semiconductor supply chain, Switzerland combines top research universities with robotics and materials, and the Nordics are strong in quantum, sensing and industrial tech.

The rest of Europe

A long tail of smaller hubs across Southern and Central and Eastern Europe, often spun out of national research institutes and increasingly backed by defence and dual-use demand. Coverage of the smallest rounds is partial, so totals here read as a floor.

What's heating up inside deep tech

Which corners of European deep tech are heating up fastest? Each sub-sector is scored on a transparent blend of two-year VC growth, unicorn formation, and recent funding scale. Quantum Computing tops the ranking, with venture capital up 193% over three years to $4.3B in 2025 and 16 unicorns. Sub-sector tags overlap (a company can sit in several), so this shows where momentum concentrates rather than splitting the total.

Unicorns & exits

European deep tech startups have minted 120 unicorns to date. Dealroom defines a unicorn as a company that has reached a $1B+ valuation or exit (verified and manually reviewed; other lists use different criteria, this is ours). Of those, 10 are decacorns, companies at a $10B+ valuation. The ecosystem also counts 68 thoroughbreds: companies generating $100M+ in revenue (a separate lens from unicorns, with some overlap). The chart below shows the cumulative count climbing each year, with the line tracking new unicorns minted in that year, peaking at 20 in 2021. On exits, the sector has produced 1,065 tracked acquisitions since 2010 representing $49.8B in disclosed value. Notable acquisitions in the data include Darktrace ($5.3B, 2024), followed by ARM ($4.9B, 2023), Sophos ($4.1B, 2019).
