WASE, a Bristol-based company founded in 2017, is commercializing a waste-to-energy solution aimed at industrial and agricultural clients. The company was established by Dr. Thomas Fudge, Llŷr Anwyl, and William Gambier. Dr. Fudge's doctoral research in waste-to-energy solutions at Brunel University London and Mr. Anwyl's background in agriculture and civil engineering formed the foundational expertise for the venture.

The core of WASE's offering is its proprietary Electro-Methanogenic Reactor (EMR) technology, which enhances the anaerobic digestion process to convert organic waste and wastewater into renewable energy. This technology utilizes special bio-electrodes with electrically active microbes that accelerate the breakdown of waste. WASE's systems are reported to increase biogas generation by 30%, treat waste up to ten times faster, and produce a higher methane content of over 80% compared to conventional methods. The modular, plug-and-play units are designed to be 50-70% smaller than traditional systems, allowing for easier integration into existing infrastructure for clients in sectors like food and beverage manufacturing and agriculture. Clients include breweries and dairy farms.

The business model focuses on providing these decentralized units to clients, helping them reduce waste treatment costs, lower energy bills, and meet environmental regulations by treating waste onsite. The company also provides ongoing maintenance and optimization services, using AI and biosensors for 24/7 monitoring. WASE has secured significant funding to support its growth, including a Series A round of £8.5 million ($10.7 million) in March 2024, led by Extantia Capital with participation from Hitachi Ventures, WEPA Ventures, and Engie New Ventures.
