Vexev
Building the next generation of non-invasive medical imaging and intelligent patient monitoring
About Vexev
Vexev is a medical technology company focused on shifting vascular healthcare from a reactive to a proactive model. The company was co-founded in 2018 by Dr. John Carroll and Dr. Eamonn Colley, who met during their PhD studies at the University of New South Wales. Their academic research, which began around 2014, centered on the relationship between blood flow dynamics and the development of vascular disease. This research led them to build a low-cost 3D ultrasound system to track vessels and model blood flow, creating a substantial dataset that captured disease onset. This foundational work illuminated the potential for regular monitoring to have a significant impact on patient outcomes, inspiring the creation of Vexev.
The company is developing a platform that combines a semi-autonomous, ultrasound-powered imaging robot with a software suite to address the limitations of current vascular imaging, which often relies on highly skilled operators using manual, 2D ultrasound devices. Vexev's technology is engineered to perform fast, consistent, and automated 3D scans of a patient's limbs with the simple push of a button. This system captures extensive data points to generate detailed 3D models of blood flow, providing clinicians with advanced analytics and insights that are not typically available from standard 2D imaging. The goal is to make high-quality vascular scanning more accessible, affordable, and less operator-dependent, enabling earlier detection of disease when interventions can be more successful and less costly.
Vexev's initial market focus is on patients with the highest risk of vascular disease, particularly the more than 500,000 hemodialysis patients in the United States. For this group, the technology, known as the VxWave™ Ultrasound Imaging System*, aims to assist in the management of arteriovenous fistulas (AVF), the surgically created access points for dialysis. By providing detailed imaging at the point of care, such as dialysis clinics, Vexev can facilitate better planning, creation, and maintenance of AVFs, which have a high failure rate. The company has partnered with U.S. Renal Care, a major US dialysis provider, and in July 2025, completed enrollment for a 120-patient clinical trial (CANSCAN) to evaluate the VxWave system for AV fistula mapping. The business model targets imaging labs, radiology chains, and point-of-care settings like dialysis clinics, where the system can increase scan throughput and provide superior diagnostic information. Vexev has secured approximately $10 million in funding from investors including Neotribe Ventures and Blackbird Ventures to support product development, team expansion, and seek regulatory approval in Australia and the United States.
*The VxWave is currently limited to investigational use and is not for sale in any geography.
