UroDev Medical, founded in 2015 as Spinal Singularity, is a venture-backed medical device company focused on urological solutions for individuals with chronic urinary retention. The company was established by Derek Herrera, a former Marine Special Operations Officer who was paralyzed from the chest down during combat in Afghanistan. Herrera’s personal experience with neurogenic bladder, a condition where a person cannot control their bladder to urinate, directly inspired the company's mission. His background as a U.S. Naval Academy Systems Engineering graduate and his subsequent MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management provided the foundation to address this unmet medical need.

The company's flagship product is the IntelliFlow™ Bladder Management System, a fully internal, smart catheter designed for adult males. This device functions as a semi-permanent, wirelessly controlled system that allows the user to empty their bladder with a remote control, eliminating the need for frequent intermittent catheterizations or permanent indwelling catheters with external drainage bags. The IntelliFlow consists of a magnetic valve pump that opens and closes via the remote, enabling the bladder to fill and be emptied on demand. A key benefit is its extended-use design, where a single IntelliFlow catheter is intended to be used for up to a week, potentially replacing as many as 50 disposable catheters during that period, thereby aiming to reduce the risk of infection.

Initially focused on patients with spinal cord injuries, UroDev Medical has since broadened its scope to address all men experiencing chronic urinary retention. This strategic shift was marked by a name change from Spinal Singularity, Inc. to UroDev Medical in early 2021, coinciding with the appointment of Matt Monarski as CEO and the relocation of its headquarters from San Clemente, California to Minneapolis, Minnesota. The company generates revenue through the sale of its medical devices. As of early 2021, the IntelliFlow system was an investigational device undergoing pivotal clinical trials in the U.S. to support future regulatory submissions for FDA clearance.
