uBiome

Biotech & Life Sciences · San Francisco, United States · Founded 2012

Microbiome sequencing service that provides information and tools for users to explore their microbiome MoreLess

uBiome was a biotechnology company founded in 2012 by scientists Jessica Richman, Zachary Apte, and Will Ludington from the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences. Initially positioning itself as a direct-to-consumer citizen science venture, the company launched with a crowdfunding campaign that raised $350,000. This was followed by significant venture capital from prominent investors including Y Combinator, Andreessen Horowitz, and 8VC. The core business idea revolved around sequencing the human microbiome to provide insights into health and wellness.

The company's business model evolved from an under-$100 direct-to-consumer product called "Gut Explorer" to a clinical testing model seeking high-value reimbursements from health insurance providers. uBiome developed and marketed clinical tests, such as "SmartGut" and "SmartJane," which were intended for physicians to use in making medical decisions regarding gut and vaginal microbiomes, with reimbursement claims reaching nearly $3,000 per test. The products were at-home kits where customers would collect a sample (gut, genital, mouth, nose, or skin) and mail it to the lab for analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The company claimed its proprietary algorithms and growing database could help identify microorganisms associated with various health conditions.

At its peak, uBiome was valued at $600 million and was recognized in 2018 on Fast Company's list of Most Innovative Companies in Data Science. However, the company's foundation was built on deceptive practices. An FBI raid on its San Francisco headquarters in April 2019 unveiled a scheme to defraud investors and insurance companies. Investigations revealed that the company engaged in improper billing, such as repeatedly billing patients without consent, pressuring doctors to approve unnecessary tests, and submitting backdated and misleading medical records to insurers. Between 2015 and 2019, uBiome submitted over $300 million in reimbursement claims and was paid more than $35 million. The founders, Richman and Apte, were also alleged to have sold over $12 million of their personal shares while misleading investors.

The scandal led to the co-founders being put on administrative leave, and the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2019, which was converted to Chapter 7 liquidation a month later, leading to its complete shutdown. In March 2021, the SEC charged Richman and Apte with defrauding investors of $60 million, and they also faced federal criminal charges for conspiracy to commit securities and healthcare fraud, and money laundering. The married couple relocated to Germany and have since been considered fugitives by the FBI.
