NFC's business model is structured around three core pillars: Community, Conservation, and Commerce, a 'Shared Value' approach that balances social, environmental, and financial outcomes. Revenue is generated through the manufacturing and sale of a variety of sustainable wood products. The company operates three pole treatment plants and two sawmills, producing essential items such as electricity transmission poles, telephone poles, sawn timber for construction, and wooden pallets. These products serve local and regional markets across East and southern Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and the DRC, offering a sustainable alternative to imported or non-sustainably sourced timber. The business is also involved in biomass projects and purchases timber from local smallholder farmers to support its high stock levels.

The company's strategy is designed to reverse the trend of exporting raw materials by creating value-added products within Africa. NFC holds Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™) certification for the majority of its plantations, adhering to international standards for responsible forest management. Through its operations, NFC contributes to regional economies by providing employment, substituting imports, and paying taxes. It has also made substantial investments in community development, including constructing schools, water points, and health centers, and supports thousands of out-grower farmers with seedlings and technical training.
