A-Mansia Biotech, rebranded as The Akkermansia Company, is a Belgian microbiome health company that develops and commercializes nutritional products based on the Akkermansia muciniphila bacterium. It was founded in 2016 as a co-spin-off from the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) in Belgium and Wageningen University in the Netherlands. The company's establishment is the result of over a decade of research by its scientific founders, Professor Patrice D. Cani from UCLouvain and Professor Willem M. de Vos from Wageningen University. Professor de Vos and his team first discovered, isolated, and characterized the A. muciniphila bacterium in 2004, and subsequent collaborative research with Professor Cani's team uncovered its beneficial effects on metabolic health.

The company's core product is a food supplement containing pasteurized Akkermansia muciniphila, a next-generation beneficial bacterium. This pasteurized form has been shown to be safe, stable, and even more effective than the live version in improving gut barrier function, which can lead to reduced inflammation and better control over glucose metabolism, fat storage, and energy expenditure. The supplement is targeted at adults looking to manage their weight and support metabolic health, addressing issues like pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, and insulin resistance. The business model is centered on the sale of these supplements, which received approval from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as a novel food ingredient in 2021, a significant milestone for the company.

A-Mansia has secured significant funding to advance its research and commercialization efforts. This includes a Series A financing round of €13 million in 2018 and a €20 million venture debt financing agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) in 2023. Major investors include Seventure Partners, Innovation Industries, and Fonds Vives II. In June 2025, The Akkermansia Company was acquired by the global food company Danone, a move set to further bolster its research and market reach.
