About Systemic Bio

Systemic Bio operated as a biotechnology firm, established in August 2022 as a subsidiary of 3D Systems, with its headquarters in Houston, Texas. The company secured $15 million in seed funding from its parent company, 3D Systems, to support its initial growth phase. The venture was founded and led by CEO Taci Pereira, whose journey in bioengineering began with a desire to contribute to new cancer treatments, leading her to study at Harvard and later join the bioprinting company Allevi. Following Allevi's acquisition by 3D Systems, Pereira's work with industrial-grade bioprinting technology paved the way for the creation of Systemic Bio.

The company's core business was centered on accelerating pharmaceutical drug discovery and development by providing an alternative to animal testing. It served pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies by offering a proprietary organ-on-a-chip platform called h-VIOS™ (human vascularized integrated organ systems). This platform utilized 3D Systems' advanced bioprinting technology to create highly precise, vascularized organ and disease models from hydrogels and human cells. These models could be manufactured in large quantities, allowing for the study of drug effects on healthy or diseased tissues at the earliest stages of development. The business model included establishing partnerships for drug discovery, providing contract research services, and selling custom-designed h-VIOS chips.

The h-VIOS platform's main feature was its ability to create vascularized hydrogel structures that mimic the physiological environment of human organs, enabling more accurate predictions of human responses to drug compounds. The technology, termed Print-to-Perfusion™, allowed for the creation of complex tissues that could be perfused with drugs to study metabolism and efficacy. A key differentiator was the platform's ability to produce these organ models with a significantly greater build volume and higher resolution than other commercially available technologies. Despite its promising technology, which included filing seven patent families and scaling production, Systemic Bio ceased operations in July 2025. The closure was attributed to the significant investment required and a strategic shift by 3D Systems to focus on profitability amidst challenging market conditions.
