About SymbioTex

SymbioTex develops a sustainable, home-compostable bioplastic material derived from seaweed to replace single-use rigid plastics. The company provides this material in the form of filaments and pellets that can be processed on standard industry machinery, offering a plug-and-play solution for manufacturers in the medical device and cosmetics packaging sectors. The technology is patented and aims to address the significant plastic waste in these industries, such as the low recycling rates for medical inhalers and cosmetic containers.

The company was founded in 2021 by Olivia Simpson, who was inspired to find an alternative to plastic waste after witnessing the volume of single-use plastics generated during a placement in the UK's National Health Service (NHS). SymbioTex's material uses sustainably cultivated red seaweed, which does not require pesticides, does not harm biodiversity, and can be processed at lower temperatures than conventional plastics. The resulting bioplastic is designed to be truly home compostable, breaking down without leaving harmful microplastics and even acting as a natural fertilizer.

SymbioTex's business model involves licensing its patented technology to manufacturers, allowing them to produce their existing products with a sustainable material. The company targets products such as cosmetic pots, medical devices like inhalers, gallipots, and sharp bin lids. SymbioTex has gained recognition through various awards, including the Version & Unloc's Young Entrepreneur Challenge in 2023, the Lord Swarj Paul Entrepreneurship prize, and being a finalist at London Tech Week.
