SPS Commerce

Other B2B Software · Minneapolis, United States · Founded 1987

Cloud-based retail supply chain management solutions MoreLess

In 1987, before the internet reshaped commerce, a company called St. Paul Software was founded in Minnesota by Gary W. Anderson and others. Their goal was to solve a persistent, unglamorous problem: helping retailers and their suppliers communicate electronically. The existing method of exchanging purchase orders, invoices, and shipping notices was a messy tangle of manual processes. The solution was Electronic Data Interchange, or EDI, a standardized way to exchange business documents. A pivotal moment came in 2000 when the company sold its software business to focus purely on internet-based B2B exchanges. Rebranding as SPS Commerce in 2001, they embraced a cloud-based, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model. Instead of selling complex software, they provided a full-service network. SPS essentially acts as a universal translator, allowing a supplier to connect once to their network and then seamlessly communicate with any retailer on the platform, and vice-versa. This network model proved powerful. The more trading partners that joined, the more valuable the service became for everyone, creating a strong network effect. This strategy fueled consistent growth, leading to a major milestone in April 2010 when SPS Commerce went public on the NASDAQ. Today, the company stands as a critical, if often invisible, piece of infrastructure in the retail world, automating the flow of data for thousands of suppliers, retailers, and distributors.
