Solbright operates as two distinct entities, both of which have been acquired. The first, a renewable energy firm, was founded in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2009 by Patrick Hassell, while the second, a media technology company, was established in New York in 1997 by Key Compton.

The renewable energy business, SolBright Renewable Energy, LLC, provides turnkey solar photovoltaic project development for military, municipal, and commercial clients. Services span the entire project lifecycle, from initial site assessment and financing to engineering, construction, and ongoing maintenance for ground-mounted, rooftop, and parking canopy solar systems. Notable projects include solar PV parking canopies for the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Johnson and Camp LeJeune. This entity was acquired by Arkados Group on March 17, 2017, for $15 million. Patrick Hassell, the founder, brought experience from his previous role as President and CEO of AkroMetrix, a microelectronics equipment manufacturer, and holds degrees in Civil Engineering and Management.

The second company, Solbright, focused on the digital media industry, providing a workflow automation platform for web publishers to manage advertising and revenue operations. Its comprehensive solution included modules for ad sales, trafficking, billing, inventory management, and reporting. This firm attracted high-profile clients such as Yahoo!, The New York Times, and USA Today. After raising $17.7 million from investors including Atex Group and Keystone Venture Capital, it was ultimately acquired by Operative in October 2010.
