About SimSim

SimSim, founded in 2018 by Amit Bagaria, Kunal Suri, and Saurabh Vashishtha, emerged as a social commerce platform in India with a clear mission: to replicate the offline retail experience for the country's next wave of internet users, particularly in Tier 2 cities and beyond. The founders brought a wealth of relevant experience to the venture; Bagaria and Vashishtha were former senior executives at the digital payments giant Paytm, while Suri had held a C-suite position at Foodpanda, providing them with deep insights into India's digital consumer landscape.

The company's business model centered on video-based commerce, connecting local businesses and brands with customers through a network of trusted influencers. The platform's core service was a mobile application where creators would post video reviews of products, and viewers could make purchases directly within the app. This approach was designed to build trust and overcome language barriers, as content was available in vernacular languages such as Hindi, Tamil, and Bengali, making product descriptions more accessible and engaging than traditional text-based e-commerce sites. SimSim's revenue was primarily generated from marketplace services, including transaction fees for each item sold through the platform. The company managed its own inventory and collaborated with logistics partners for product delivery.

The platform's key feature was its use of influencer-generated video content to sell products ranging from fashion to household goods. This strategy specifically targeted the needs of new internet users who prefer interactive, video-first experiences. Before its acquisition, SimSim had successfully raised approximately $17 million in funding from notable investors including Accel, Shunwei Capital, and Good Capital. In July 2021, in a significant milestone, YouTube acquired SimSim for a reported value of over $70 million. The acquisition was part of Google's broader strategy to tap into India's burgeoning social commerce market and help small businesses expand their online presence. Following the acquisition, the SimSim app initially continued to operate independently. However, YouTube later announced it would shut down the SimSim app in March 2023, with plans to integrate its social commerce features, like an affiliate program, more broadly across the YouTube platform.
