SHIELD SPACE is a UK-based defence technology company developing systems for space control and counterspace operations. Founded in 2025 by Graeme Ritchie and Dan Molland, the startup aims to provide sovereign space capabilities to the UK, NATO, and their allies, enabling them to operate decisively in contested orbital environments. The founders met while working at UK Space Command. CEO Graeme Ritchie is a former RAF defence technology specialist with experience deploying advanced systems, and he also founded Shield UAS Solutions, a drone operations consultancy. CTO Dr. Daniel Molland specializes in launch integration, having contributed to payloads on SpaceX and NASA missions.

The company's core focus is on developing agile, networked clusters of smaller spacecraft that can maneuver, inspect, and neutralize threats, drawing lessons from modern drone warfare. Its key technology is the IRIS Autonomy System, an onboard AI-driven guidance and decision-making software. This system enables satellites to autonomously detect, track, classify, and maneuver away from potential threats—such as signal jamming, co-orbital attacks, or space debris—without direct intervention from ground control. This machine-speed response capability is designed to function even when ground communications are denied or limited.

SHIELD SPACE offers a suite of integrated capability systems. These include the 'LEOPARD' interceptor for proximity operations, 'HARBINGER' for point-defence of high-value assets, and 'NEXUS', a carrier vehicle for deploying multiple swarming satellites. The company's business model targets defence organizations, government customers, and strategic partners in the space security sector, primarily NATO and allied nations. In January 2026, the company secured £2 million in a funding round led by the Midlands Engine Investment Fund II through Mercia Ventures, with participation from Twin Path Ventures, ROI Ventures, and P3A Ventures. This capital is intended to fund the expansion of its team, establish new premises in Lincoln, and prepare for its first orbital test flight scheduled for early 2027.
