Quantware

QuantWare is a Dutch company focused on developing and fabricating scalable, superconducting quantum processors. Founded in 2021 as a spin-out from QuTech at TU Delft by CEO Matthijs Rijlaarsdam and CTO Alessandro Bruno, the company aims to accelerate the advent of useful quantum computing by providing the core hardware components. Rijlaarsdam has a background in computer science and quantum information, while Bruno previously served as Head of Fabrication in a research group at QuTech and holds a PhD in Quantum Computing. The company's primary business model is to design, produce, and sell quantum processing units (QPUs) to a global customer base that includes quantum computing companies, national research institutes, and technology conglomerates. This component-supplier strategy positions QuantWare as an enabler for the broader quantum ecosystem, similar to the role of specialized chip manufacturers in the classical computing industry. By focusing exclusively on QPUs, QuantWare provides other organizations with the ability to build quantum systems without having to develop the processors themselves, which can significantly lower costs. QuantWare’s technological centerpiece is its proprietary VIO™ architecture, a 3D integration technology designed to overcome the scaling limitations of traditional 2D chip designs. In planar layouts, most of the chip area is consumed by wiring, which creates bottlenecks as qubit counts increase. VIO™ addresses this by routing control signals vertically, allowing for much denser qubit arrangements and enabling the creation of large, powerful processors on a single, modular platform. The company has outlined a roadmap for processors with thousands of qubits, such as the VIO-40K™ architecture, which is designed to support up to 10,000 qubits. Its product line includes the Soprano and Contralto series of QPUs, which offer varying qubit counts and are commercially available. Since its inception, QuantWare has become a high-volume commercial supplier of QPUs, having shipped processors to over 50 customers in more than 20 countries. The company has attracted significant investment from strategic and venture capital firms, including a heavily oversubscribed Series B funding round of $178 million in May 2026. Key investors include Intel Capital and IQT (In-Q-Tel). This funding is being used to construct KiloFab, a dedicated open-architecture quantum fabrication facility intended to increase production capacity by 20x and meet growing global demand.
