Pony.ai is an autonomous vehicle technology company with operations co-located in Silicon Valley, Beijing, and Guangzhou. Founded in December 2016 by James Peng and Tiancheng Lou, the company specializes in developing Level 4 autonomous driving systems. Both founders brought valuable experience to the venture; Peng previously served as a chief architect at Baidu after working at Google, while Lou was a programmer at GoogleX before becoming the youngest T10 engineer in Baidu's autonomous driving division.

The company's core technology is a vehicle-agnostic "Virtual Driver" that integrates proprietary software and hardware. This full-stack solution powers three main business units: Robotaxi, Robotruck, and Personally Owned Vehicles (POV), where it licenses its technology. The company operates its PonyPilot mobile app for fare-charging robotaxi services in all four Tier-1 cities in China: Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. The Robotruck division focuses on autonomous freight and logistics, developing solutions like truck platooning where one lead truck guides multiple driverless follow-vehicles. Pony.ai has also tested its robotrucks on highways, transporting goods between hubs.

Pony.ai has established strategic partnerships with major automotive manufacturers such as Toyota, Sany Heavy Industry, and Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor to develop and mass-produce autonomous vehicles. The company's hardware has evolved through several generations, with a focus on reducing costs and using automotive-grade components to prepare for mass production. It has received significant funding from investors including Toyota, Sequoia China, and in October 2023, received a $100 million investment from NEOM to establish a regional R&D and manufacturing headquarters in the MENA region. After suspending plans for an SPAC merger in 2021, Pony.ai held its initial public offering (IPO) on the Nasdaq in November 2024.
