Panavision

Panavision, formally incorporated in 1954, is an American company specializing in motion picture equipment, particularly cameras and lenses. It was founded by Robert Gottschalk in partnership with Richard Moore, Meredith Nicholson, Harry Eller, Walter Wallin, and William Mann. Gottschalk, who owned a camera shop frequented by cinematographers, became interested in anamorphic lens technology while experimenting with underwater photography. This led him to address the growing demand for anamorphic projection lenses for widescreen formats like CinemaScope. The company's first product, the Super Panatar projection lens, launched in 1954 and quickly dominated the market.

A pivotal shift in Panavision's business model occurred in the mid-1960s when Gottschalk decided to operate exclusively as a rental facility, maintaining ownership of the entire equipment inventory. This strategy ensured that all equipment could be meticulously maintained, modified, and updated by the company, a model that differentiates it from most competitors who sell their equipment. This rental-only approach, which covers camera systems, lighting, and grip equipment, generates the majority of the company's revenue. The company serves the motion picture and television industries globally, with facilities and a network of agents across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South Africa.

Over the years, Panavision has achieved significant technological milestones. In 1958, the Auto Panatar lens, which corrected for anamorphic close-up distortions, earned the company its first Academy Award. The introduction of the lightweight Panaflex 35mm camera in 1972 revolutionized filmmaking by enabling greater mobility. The company has continued to develop its product line with cameras like the Millennium XL in 1999 and entered the digital realm with the Genesis in 2004, developed in partnership with Sony. Panavision also offers end-to-end solutions, including post-production services like dailies, visual effects, and color grading through its subsidiary Light Iron, and lighting filters through LEE Filters.
