ORiS
Laser-based wireless power transmission for space assets
About ORiS
ORiS, an acronym for Orbital Recharge in Space, is an Italian aerospace company founded in 2021 as a spin-off from the Polytechnic University of Turin. The company originated from a master's degree student project in 2022, which gained traction through various innovation challenges and grants. Key figures include CEO Andrea Villa, CTO Anna Mauro, and Co-Founder and CCO Domenico Edoardo Sfasciamuro. The founding team, composed of aerospace engineering students, was supported by Professor Stefano Mauro, who is now a partner and scientific advisor.
ORiS is developing a wireless power transmission infrastructure to extend the life and enhance the operational efficiency of space-based assets. The core technology utilizes a constellation of satellites equipped with high-power laser payloads to collect solar energy and beam it to client satellites, drones, or surface systems, such as lunar bases. This system is designed to provide continuous energy, even during eclipses or peak demand, by directing the laser at the target's existing solar panels, eliminating the need for retrofitting. The technology consists of a space-rated laser source, precision optical systems for long-distance targeting, and a receiving system to convert light back into electricity.
The company's primary market focus is in-orbit services and the emerging lunar economy. By providing power during the 14-day lunar night, ORiS aims to enable uninterrupted operations for future human bases, rovers, and other infrastructure on the Moon. The business model is centered on providing an in-orbit recharging service. The company has secured seed funding totaling over $829K from investors including Galaxia, CDP Venture Capital, and was selected for NATO's DIANA accelerator. ORiS has established a commercial memorandum of understanding with Telespazio Germany to develop the ground segment and mission operations for its in-orbit servicing capabilities. The first launch of its technology into orbit is planned for 2027.
