OrganOx

OrganOx is a commercial-stage medical technology company that spun out of the University of Oxford in April 2008. It was founded by Professor Peter Friend, a transplant surgeon, and Professor Constantin Coussios, a biomedical engineer, who collaborated to address the shortage of viable organs for transplantation. Their combined expertise in surgery and biomedical engineering led to the development of the company's core technology over more than 15 years.

The company's flagship product is the OrganOx metra®, a portable, automated device for normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) of donor livers. Unlike conventional cold storage at 4°C, the metra® system maintains the liver at a normal body temperature of 37°C, continuously perfusing it with oxygenated blood, nutrients, and medications. This process mimics the organ's physiological environment, keeping it functional and allowing for objective assessment of its health and viability prior to transplantation. The ability to preserve organs for up to 24 hours significantly extends the window for transplantation, improves logistics, and has been shown to reduce the number of discarded organs.

OrganOx operates on a business model that involves leasing its metra® devices to transplant centers and hospitals, supplemented by the sale of single-use disposable perfusion sets required for each procedure. Its clients are specialist liver transplant units in markets including Europe, the U.S., Canada, and Australia. The company has raised significant funding, including a $160 million financing round in 2025, to expand its commercial footprint, build new manufacturing facilities, and fund further clinical evaluations. OrganOx is also developing its technology for other applications, including kidney transplantation and in combination with genetically engineered porcine livers to support patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure.
