Develops software for self-driving vehicles MoreLess

nuTonomy emerged in 2013 as a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), founded by Dr. Karl Iagnemma and Professor Emilio Frazzoli, two specialists in robotics and autonomous systems. Their academic and research backgrounds at MIT, including work on algorithms for military drones and participation in DARPA's autonomous vehicle challenges, provided the foundational expertise for the company. The firm's central mission was to develop a comprehensive software solution for autonomous vehicles, specifically targeting the complexities of urban mobility.

The company's core product is a full-stack software suite designed to enable passenger vehicles to navigate intricate city environments without a driver. This system, known as nuCore, incorporates functionalities for perception, localization, motion planning, and decision-making. It was engineered to be vehicle-agnostic, allowing for partnerships with a wide range of automotive manufacturers. nuTonomy's business model focused on deploying large fleets of autonomous taxis, or "robo-taxis," for on-demand ride-hailing services. Revenue generation was planned through licensing its software to carmakers and by operating its own autonomous ride-sharing fleets, charging passengers per trip.

A significant milestone for nuTonomy was the launch of the world's first public trial of a self-driving taxi service in Singapore in August 2016. This pilot program, conducted in partnership with the Singapore government and later with ride-hailing company Grab, allowed select users to hail autonomous vehicles via a smartphone app within a designated district. The company also initiated testing in its home city of Boston, partnering with Lyft for a similar pilot. In October 2017, the automotive technology supplier Delphi Automotive (now Aptiv) announced its acquisition of nuTonomy for approximately $450 million. This move integrated nuTonomy's software expertise and engineering team into Delphi's broader push into autonomous mobility. Subsequently, nuTonomy's team and technology became a fundamental component of Motional, an autonomous driving joint venture formed by Aptiv and Hyundai Motor Group in 2020.
