Fermentation-based palm oil alternative from upcycled sidestreams. MoreLess
NoPalm Ingredients was established in the Netherlands in June 2021 by CEO Lars Langhout and CTO Professor Dr. Jeroen Hugenholtz. The venture originated when Langhout, who has a background in strategy consulting and an MBA from Columbia Business School, was inspired by an article on Hugenholtz's research at Wageningen University. Hugenholtz, with over 40 years of expertise, had developed a method for creating yeast oils. The two collaborated to commercialize this technology, aiming to address the environmental and supply chain issues associated with conventional palm oil. The company produces a sustainable, local, and circular alternative to palm oil through a proprietary fermentation process. This low-capex technology utilizes non-GMO yeasts to convert upcycled agri-food sidestreams, such as potato peels, rejected vegetables, and whey permeate, into high-performing microbial oils and fats. The resulting product is designed as a drop-in replacement for tropical oils in food, cosmetics, and personal care products, requiring no recipe reformulation and achieving price parity. The technology boasts a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions and requires 99% less land compared to traditional palm oil production. The residual yeast biomass, rich in protein and vitamins, can be upcycled into other products like animal feed. NoPalm Ingredients operates on a B2B model, supplying its oils and fats to manufacturers. The company has engaged in pilot programs with major industry players, including Unilever, Colgate-Palmolive, and Zeelandia, to validate its product's quality and application. The firm has secured significant funding to scale its operations, including a €1 million round in January 2022 and a €5 million seed round in July 2024, led by Rubio Impact Ventures. NoPalm Ingredients is establishing its first demonstration factory at the NIZO Food Innovation Campus, with plans to reach commercialization in 2025 and scale production to over 1,200 metric tons annually.
