Nimbix operates as a specialized provider of high-performance computing (HPC) cloud platforms, a venture initiated in 2010. The company was co-founded by Steve Hebert and Rob Sherrard, who shared a vision of making supercomputing capabilities accessible via the cloud. Their journey began in Hebert's garage, where they constructed their first accelerated cloud supercomputer. Hebert, with a background in electrical engineering from Santa Clara University and over 25 years in the technology sector, including roles at Texas Instruments and Altera, brought technical sales and marketing expertise. Sherrard's experience traces back to the early days of AudioNet (later Broadcast.com), where he developed a passion for building and scaling online services and data centers.

The firm's core offering is its purpose-built cloud platform for machine learning, AI, and HPC applications. This platform, powered by its patented JARVICE™ software, provides high-performance software-as-a-service (SaaS) to accelerate data processing. Nimbix differentiates itself by running workloads on bare-metal systems using containerization rather than traditional virtualization, which can enhance performance. The business model primarily revolves around a pay-per-use service, granting clients access to its infrastructure and software without significant upfront capital expenditure. This targets enterprises in sectors such as energy, life sciences, manufacturing, media, and defense. The company also offers the Nimbix Supercomputing Suite which includes on-demand elastic consumption models and federated services. A key feature is the HyperHub application marketplace, which provides access to over 1,000 HPC applications and workflows.

A significant milestone in Nimbix's history was its acquisition by the French IT services and consulting company Atos in July 2021. The acquisition was a strategic move for Atos to strengthen its position in the HPC cloud market, particularly in North America, and to integrate Nimbix's capabilities into its Atos OneCloud initiative. Following the acquisition, Nimbix became part of Atos's Eviden business line, which focuses on digital, cloud, big data, and security. Steve Hebert transitioned to the role of VP, Global Head of Atos Nimbix HPC Cloud. This development allowed Nimbix to leverage Atos's global footprint while providing Atos with advanced HPC cloud orchestration capabilities.
