MotherDuck

MotherDuck is a serverless data warehouse built on the open-source DuckDB in-process analytics database. Founded in 2022 and headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the company aims to simplify data analytics by combining the speed of DuckDB with the scalability and collaborative features of the cloud. MotherDuck targets use cases for both small and large datasets, challenging the idea that all data problems are "big data" problems.

The company was founded by Jordan Tigani, Tino Tereshko, Ryan Boyd, and Leila Horejsi. The founding team possesses extensive experience from innovative data companies like Google BigQuery, SingleStore, and Firebolt. Tigani, the CEO, was a founding engineer and product leader for Google BigQuery and saw an opportunity to create a serverless version of the fast-growing DuckDB. He partnered with DuckDB's creators, Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt of DuckDB Labs, who became co-founders of the new venture. Tino Tereshko, another BigQuery veteran, joined as a co-founder and serves as VP of Product. The name "MotherDuck" was suggested by Lloyd Tabb, the founder of Looker.

MotherDuck has raised a total of $100 million in funding over three rounds, reaching a valuation of $400 million by September 2023. Its investors include Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures, Felicis, and Madrona Venture Group. The product officially launched in June 2023.

The platform operates on a unique hybrid execution model, allowing queries to be processed locally on a user's machine, in the cloud, or both, optimizing for speed and cost-efficiency. This architecture, which the company calls "hypertenancy," provides each user with their own isolated compute instance (a "duckling") to prevent resource contention and ensure consistent performance. The system is designed for a variety of users, including data analysts, engineers, and data scientists, and integrates with popular tools in the modern data stack like dbt, Fivetran, and Tableau. MotherDuck's platform adds essential features for organizational use that are not native to DuckDB, such as cloud storage, sharing, collaboration, and security. Its business model is expected to be a mix of subscription and usage-based pricing, aiming for a low cost of entry. The platform also incorporates AI features, like a SQL fixer and the ability to generate SQL queries from natural language.
