Mecademic

Mecademic is a Montreal-based robotics company founded in 2013 by Jonathan Coulombe, a CNC machinist, and Ilian Bonev, a robotics professor at ÉTS engineering university. The founders initially developed a dual-arm SCARA robot named DexTAR for the academic market, which inspired the company's name—a blend of "mechanics" and "academic". However, interest from industrial players shifted their focus toward developing compact, high-precision robotic arms for industrial automation.

The company operates by designing, manufacturing, and selling miniaturized robotic arms and related components. Its business model centers on providing "plug-and-work" automation components that are simple to integrate, unlike traditional complex robotic systems that require extensive training. Mecademic sells its products through a network of distribution and value-added partners across North America, Europe, and Asia, serving clients in sectors like electronics, medical devices, aerospace, and lab automation.

Mecademic's flagship product is the Meca500, a six-axis industrial robot arm noted for its small size and precision, with a repeatability of 5 micrometers. Weighing only 4.5 kg with a payload of 0.5 kg, its controller is embedded directly into its base, eliminating the need for a bulky external cabinet and making it suitable for confined spaces. This design allows it to be operated via a direct Ethernet connection to a PC or PLC using common programming languages like Python or C#. More recently, the company launched the MCS500, a compact 4-axis SCARA robot, and the Meca500-OBS, which features a light-absorbent surface for optics manufacturing and AI vision systems. The company also produces grippers and other accessories to complement its robotic arms.
