Unlocking health insights from human physiological data MoreLess
MC10, Inc. was a healthcare technology company founded in 2008, built on the scientific vision of co-founder John Rogers, who sought to bridge the gap between rigid electronics and the human body. Rogers, a prolific inventor and professor, teamed with individuals including Carmichael Roberts and Ben Schlatka to establish the company. Another key co-founder, Roozbeh Ghaffari, brought his expertise in biomedical engineering and neuroscience, serving as the Chief Technology Officer. Ghaffari's background in bioelectronics and microfluidics was instrumental in developing the company's core technology.
The company specialized in developing ultra-thin, flexible, and stretchable body-worn sensors designed to collect and analyze physiological data. This technology, known as "elastronics," mimics the properties of human skin, allowing for seamless integration with the body to monitor vitals without the constraints of traditional boxy devices. MC10's business model focused on partnerships with major brands and institutions across several verticals, including regulated medical, consumer health, and sports and fitness. Rather than marketing directly to consumers, MC10 provided the underlying technology to partners who had established market access.
One of its earliest consumer-facing products was the CHECKLIGHT, a sensor-equipped skullcap developed with Reebok to detect head impacts in sports to help identify potential concussions. In the consumer health space, it partnered with L'Oréal on a stretchable electronic to measure UV exposure. The company's core platform technology was manifested in its BioStamp systems. The BioStampRC was an early version used by universities and pharmaceutical companies for research. A more advanced iteration, the BioStamp nPoint® system, received FDA 510(k) clearance in 2018. This system provided a platform for collecting continuous physiological data in a home or clinical setting, serving researchers and healthcare professionals conducting clinical trials. The platform included wearable sensors, a mobile application to guide patients, and an investigator-facing app to manage data on vital signs, activity, and sleep. In October 2020, the digital biomarker business of MC10 was acquired by Medidata, a subsidiary of Dassault Systèmes, to enhance their capabilities in remote biometric data capture for virtual and hybrid clinical trials.
