About Makera

Makera Inc. operates in the desktop manufacturing sector, providing high-performance CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines tailored for small businesses, educators, hobbyists, and professionals. The company was established in 2019 by a team of makers experienced in electronics, machinery, and software, including founder and engineer Josh Zhang. The initial idea stemmed from frustration with existing desktop fabrication tools that were noisy and inefficient. This led to a two-year development period culminating in their first product.

Makera's business centers on the direct sale of its desktop CNC machines and related accessories. A significant part of its market entry strategy has involved crowdfunding. In September 2021, the company launched its first product, the Carvera, on Kickstarter, raising over $1.7 million from 588 backers. Following this success, they introduced the Carvera Air in April 2024, which secured over $3.47 million from 2,098 backers, becoming a highly-funded project in its category on the platform. The company has a global presence, with headquarters in Beijing, China, and a U.S. base in Delaware, handling worldwide customer support and warranty services.

The company’s product line includes the Carvera and the more recent Carvera Air. These machines are designed to be fully enclosed to minimize noise and dust, making them suitable for various environments, including offices and classrooms. Key features include automatic tool changing, auto-leveling, a smart touch probe, and an integrated vacuum system, which automate much of the setup and machining process. The machines can handle a wide range of materials, including wood, plastics, aluminum, brass, and carbon fiber, and are used for applications like PCB milling, engraving, and creating 3D carvings. An optional fourth-axis module allows for more complex, cylindrical machining. To complement its hardware, Makera provides its own free CAM software, released in early 2025, which is compatible with popular design software like Fusion 360.
