Magazine Luiza

Home Living · Louveira, Brazil · Founded 1957 · IPO 2011

Magazine Luiza retails home appliances, personal electronics, and furniture products through physical and virtual stores MoreLess

In 1957, the husband-and-wife team of Luiza Trajano Donato and Pelegrino Donato acquired a small gift shop named 'A Cristaleira' in Franca, Brazil. To rename the store, they held a contest on a local radio station, and the community chose 'Magazine Luiza' to honor the popular salesperson, Luiza. This event marked the founding of what would become a major Brazilian retailer. By the early 1990s, leadership transitioned to the founders' niece, Luiza Helena Trajano. Recognizing the limitations of physical expansion in a volatile economy, she pioneered 'virtual stores' in 1992. These were not internet-based but physical locations with multimedia kiosks where customers could order products for home delivery, a prescient move before widespread internet access in Brazil. The company's next significant chapter began with its Initial Public Offering (IPO) in April 2011, listing on the São Paulo stock exchange. This set the stage for a profound digital transformation, accelerated when Luiza Helena's son, Frederico Trajano, became CEO in 2016. Under his leadership, Magazine Luiza, now known as Magalu, aggressively integrated its physical stores with a robust e-commerce platform and marketplace, launching the innovation lab LuizaLabs to drive the effort. This focus on an omnichannel strategy and a digital ecosystem has defined its modern identity.
