Founded in June 2018 by Jani Pasha and Vipul Chaudhary, Lokal operates as a hyperlocal platform targeting the non-English speaking, Tier 2 and Tier 3 populations of India. The company originated as a WhatsApp group in Kodad, a small town in Telangana, before evolving into its current app-based format. The founders, both with prior entrepreneurial experience, including co-founding an AI-based news platform called TheSoup, identified a significant gap in the digital market for this demographic. Pasha, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus, brought experience from roles at Tata Steel and Zoomo India, while Chaudhary, an IIT Bombay graduate, previously worked as a senior engineer at Qualcomm.

The platform functions as a comprehensive digital resource, offering local news, classifieds, job listings, real estate, matrimonial ads, and information on local commodity prices and government schemes. It operates in multiple regional languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Marathi, across more than 250 districts. The service relies on a network of user-generated content and stringers, similar to traditional regional newspapers, ensuring high local relevance and trust. This model is augmented by an in-house digital reporter training program available on the app, which allows users to become content contributors and earn money.

Revenue generation for the Bengaluru-based company is multifaceted. It provides content-led digital marketing solutions for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and larger brands like Amazon, Swiggy, and Axis Bank, helping them penetrate rural markets. The business model incorporates advertising, classifieds for local businesses, and fees for specific services, mirroring the revenue streams of traditional newspapers but adapted for a digital platform. Having secured significant venture capital, including a Series B round in 2023, Lokal has raised over $31 million from investors such as Y Combinator, India Quotient, 3one4 Capital, Global Brain, and Sony Innovation Fund.
