Intezyne is Treating Cancer Better MoreLess

Intezyne Technologies, established in 2004, is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Tampa, Florida, centered on developing novel cancer therapies. The company was co-founded by Kevin Sill and Habib Skaff, specialists in synthetic polymer chemistry and nanotechnology. Their work led to the creation of the IVECT™ Method, a nanotechnology platform designed to deliver chemotherapeutic agents directly to tumors, enhancing their anti-tumor activity while potentially minimizing side effects associated with systemic distribution.

The company's business model is focused on advancing its proprietary assets through the clinical approval process with the ultimate goal of licensing its products to, or being acquired by, a large pharmaceutical company. Intezyne generates no revenue from product sales and is fully funded by investors. Since its inception, the company has raised $19.3 million over seven funding rounds, including a notable $10 million Series A round in October 2017 led by Gaston Capital. Other investors include BioAdvance Capital, Tampa Bay Technology Incubator, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

A significant milestone in Intezyne's history was the acquisition of Niiki Pharma in June 2013. This strategic move expanded Intezyne's pipeline, transforming it into a clinical-stage entity with several compounds in development. The acquisition brought in IT-139, a GRP78 suppressor being investigated for neuroendocrine, pancreatic, and gastric cancers, which was later granted Orphan Drug Designation for pancreatic cancer. In 2016, a discovery related to IT-139 led to the development of BOLD-100, a compound with a more predictable and scalable manufacturing process, which was subsequently spun out to Bold Therapeutics, a company established by Intezyne's largest investor, Gaston Capital.

Intezyne's current pipeline, leveraging its proprietary polymer technologies, includes multiple product candidates. The portfolio features IT-141, a novel topoisomerase I (TOP-I) inhibitor for colorectal and breast cancers, and IT-147, an antimicrotubule agent. The IVECT platform is versatile, capable of encapsulating a wide range of molecules from small drugs to nucleic acids and peptides, and can be modified with targeting ligands to further specify drug delivery. This approach aims to improve the efficacy of existing and new anti-cancer therapies by concentrating the therapeutic agent at the tumor site.
