Semiconductor and software products such as communications processors and other power access infrastructure MoreLess
Ikanos Communications, Inc. operated as a fabless semiconductor company, providing high-performance semiconductor and software products engineered for broadband connectivity in the digital home. Founded in 1999 by Dado Banatao and Behrooz Rezvani, the firm was initially incorporated as Velocity Communications before rebranding in December 2000. Banatao, a managing partner at Tallwood Venture Capital, also served as the company's chairman and interim CEO at various points, leveraging his extensive experience in the semiconductor industry.
The company's business model centered on designing and selling digital subscriber line (DSL) processors and other semiconductor solutions to network equipment manufacturers (NEMs), original design manufacturers (ODMs), and contract manufacturers (CMs). These clients would then integrate Ikanos's technology into customer premises equipment (CPE) and access infrastructure for major telecommunications service providers. Ikanos established a significant position in the VDSL market and was also a key provider of ADSL technology, shipping over 330 million ports.
Ikanos's product portfolio included advanced communications processors, such as the Fusiv family, and broadband DSL chipsets that enabled the delivery of triple-play and quadruple-play services. Its offerings powered devices like residential gateways, optical network terminals, and DSL access multiplexers (DSLAMs). A notable product was the inSIGHT software, which allowed for remote diagnostics and management of broadband connections. A key strategic move was the acquisition of Conexant's Broadband Access product line in 2009 for approximately $54 million, which significantly broadened its product portfolio and was expected to more than double its revenue. Throughout its history, Ikanos faced financial challenges, including periods of net losses. In August 2015, Qualcomm's subsidiary, Qualcomm Atheros, announced its intention to acquire Ikanos for approximately $47 million, a deal that was finalized by September 2015. The acquisition was aimed at expanding Qualcomm's footprint in the carrier fixed-line segment by integrating Ikanos's A/VDSL2 and G.fast modem technologies. However, in August 2016, Qualcomm Atheros closed the Ikanos operations.
