ID Biomedical

ID Biomedical was an integrated biotechnology company focused on the development and manufacturing of innovative vaccine products, primarily for influenza. Founded in 1991 and headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, the company played a significant role in the vaccine market. One of its co-founders was Anthony Holler, who also served as CEO.

The company's core business involved the research, development, manufacturing, and marketing of vaccines. A key product was Fluviral, an egg-based influenza vaccine that supplied a significant portion of Canada's demand and was also approved in the US. ID Biomedical was actively expanding its manufacturing capabilities to meet the growing global demand for flu vaccines, with projections to produce around 75 million doses annually starting in 2007.

In a strategic move to significantly increase its flu vaccine manufacturing capacity for both seasonal and pandemic threats, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) acquired ID Biomedical. The acquisition was announced in September 2005 for approximately $1.7 billion CAD ($1.4 billion USD), including the assumption of debt. The deal was finalized on December 8, 2005, after which ID Biomedical became a wholly-owned subsidiary of GSK, bolstering GSK's position in the North American vaccine market. The acquisition provided GSK with ID Biomedical's Canadian manufacturing facilities and its pipeline, which included an intranasal flu vaccine candidate.
