Heidelberg Pharma AG is a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company specializing in the development of cancer therapies. The company's origins trace back to Wilex Biotechnology GmbH, founded in 1997 by a team of physicians and cancer researchers from the Technical University of Munich. It became Wilex AG in 2000 and, following a strategic restructuring and the acquisition of Heidelberg Pharma GmbH, officially changed its name to Heidelberg Pharma AG in October 2017, relocating its headquarters from Munich to Ladenburg, Germany. This shift consolidated the company's focus on the innovative ADC technology developed by its new subsidiary, now named Heidelberg Pharma Research GmbH.

The company's core business revolves around its proprietary Antibody-Drug Conjugate (ADC) platforms. ADCs are designed as targeted cancer treatments that link the specificity of an antibody to the cell-killing power of a potent toxin, delivering the payload directly to tumor cells. Heidelberg Pharma's primary platform is the Antibody Targeted Amanitin Conjugate (ATAC) technology. Amanitin works by inhibiting RNA polymerase II, a novel mechanism of action that can kill both proliferating and dormant tumor cells, potentially overcoming treatment resistance. The company is expanding its ADC toolbox with other payloads, such as Exatecan, to address a wider range of cancers.

Heidelberg Pharma's business model encompasses developing its own pipeline of therapeutic candidates, establishing research collaborations and licensing its technology platform to partners. Its lead proprietary candidate, HDP-101, is a BCMA-targeting ATAC currently in Phase I/IIa clinical trials for treating relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. Initial clinical data for HDP-101 has shown encouraging results, including an ongoing complete response in a heavily pretreated patient. Other pipeline candidates target indications such as non-Hodgkin lymphoma (HDP-102), metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (HDP-103), and gastrointestinal tumors. Revenue is generated through collaboration agreements, technology licensing, and preclinical contract research services offered by its subsidiary. The company also has legacy assets out-licensed to partners, including a diagnostic imaging agent for kidney cancer.

As of February 2024, the company is led by CEO Prof. Dr. Andreas Pahl, who previously served as Chief Scientific Officer since 2016 and has been with the company since 2012. He is a chemist with over 25 years of experience in both academic research and the pharmaceutical industry, including positions at Takeda. He succeeded Dr. Jan Schmidt-Brand, who had been instrumental in the company's transformation and focus on ADC technology since joining in 2001. The management team also includes CFO Walter Miller and COO Jorg Kemkowski.
