GITAI

GITAI is a space robotics startup focused on providing safe and affordable robotic labor for tasks in space, aiming to reduce operational costs by a factor of 100. The company was founded in July 2016 by Sho Nakanose, who serves as CEO, and Kenichi Usami. Nakanose was inspired to start the company after his experience starting and selling a business in India and participating in Singularity University's GSP program. The company name, which means "Cybernetic body" in Japanese, is a nod to the anime 'Ghost in the Shell'.

The 'R1' lunar rover is a four-legged, rolling robot with two arms designed for general-purpose tasks on the moon, including exploration, mining, and infrastructure construction. The company has successfully demonstrated its technology on the International Space Station (ISS).

The company operates on a Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) business model, allowing clients to use its robots for various lunar and in-orbit missions without large upfront investments. Its main clients include space station providers, satellite servicing companies, and lunar exploration entities. Originally founded in Tokyo, Japan, GITAI has expanded its presence significantly in the United States, establishing a headquarters in Torrance, California, and officially becoming a U.S.-based company in late 2023. This move was strategic to better compete for U.S. government contracts, leading to the establishment of GITAI Defense & Space LLC in 2025 to serve as a prime contractor for the Department of Defense (DoD) and NASA. The company has secured numerous funding rounds, including a Series B extension that brought the total to $60.5 million.
