About eponym
Eponym operates as a licensing platform, creating a pathway for contemporary fashion and luxury brands to enter the eyewear market. The company was established in 2010 by co-founders Andrew Lipovsky, a former financial analyst, and Richard Ray Ruiz. The idea for the venture sparked after Lipovsky visited an eyewear trade show and noticed a gap in the market for smaller, niche fashion labels that were not large enough to partner with industry giants like Luxottica.

To prove their concept, the founders first launched their own house brand, Classic Specs, which they initially sold at the Brooklyn Flea market to gain direct consumer insights. This hands-on experience informed the development of their platform. The business model centers on providing a turnkey solution for brand partners. Eponym embeds with a brand's design team to collaboratively create a signature eyewear collection. Following development, Eponym manages the entire operational lifecycle, including building and hosting a custom e-commerce site, product fulfillment, customer service, and even co-marketing efforts. This allows brands to leverage their existing customer base and brand identity to launch into eyewear with minimal operational overhead. Revenue is generated by taking a percentage of sales from these partnerships.
The company's first major partnership was with designer Steven Alan in 2013, a collaboration that proved successful and led to a renewed 10-year contract. Eponym has since expanded its portfolio to include partnerships with other well-known fashion names such as Jason Wu, Alice + Olivia, and Anthropologie. In August 2016, Eponym secured a $7 million Series A funding round led by Tenfore Holdings, Tribeca Venture Partners, and RiverPark Ventures, which was used to expand staff, marketing, and technology. Andrew Lipovsky has since sold Eponym and started a new company called Highrise.
