Envy

Consumer Services · Dallas, United States · Founded 2007

The owner of Texas based popular esports franchises Team Envy, Dallas Fuel and Dallas Empire MoreLess

Envy Gaming stands as a significant entity in the esports industry, with a complex history of branding and ownership. Originally founded in 2007 by Tosh "Stainville" Mcgruder and Skyler "Foreplayy" Johnson, the organization began as a professional "Call of Duty" team named Team EnVyUs. Mike "Hastr0" Rufail, initially a team member who joined in 2009, eventually became the team's owner. Rufail, a media studies graduate, leveraged his background in the psychology of media to grow the organization. The company was formally established as Envy Gaming, LLC in October 2012 and later incorporated in May 2016.

The firm's business model centers on professional esports competition, content creation, and live events. It generates revenue through tournament winnings, sponsorships, and merchandise sales. Over the years, Envy has fielded competitive rosters in numerous games, including "Counter-Strike," "Halo," "Overwatch," "Valorant," and "Rocket League". A major milestone occurred in September 2017 with a reported $35 million investment from Hersh Interactive Group, which prompted a relocation to Dallas, Texas, and the acquisition of the Dallas-based Overwatch League franchise spot, creating the Dallas Fuel. The company later established a Call of Duty League franchise, the Dallas Empire. Envy also attracted high-profile investors, including an undisclosed stake by artist Post Malone in August 2020.

In a significant strategic shift, Envy Gaming merged with rival organization OpTic Gaming in November 2021. Following the merger, the Envy brand was officially retired in June 2022, with its teams and content creators rebranding under the OpTic Gaming name, a move aimed at eliminating brand confusion and consolidating resources. The Dallas Fuel remained an exception, keeping its original branding. However, the Envy brand was revived after Mike Rufail re-acquired the name and associated trademarks from OpTic on January 17, 2025. Subsequently, in March 2025, the revived Envy Gaming announced a merger with Native Gaming, with Native's CEO Dean Duro becoming a co-owner, marking a new, partly Indigenous-owned era for the organization.
