Ensilica

Ensilica is a fabless semiconductor design house that provides custom application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and system houses. Founded in 2001 by Ian Lankshear and two colleagues, the company was initially established as a consultancy for semiconductor companies. Lankshear, who holds a first-class degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, previously worked for technology leaders like Siemens, Hitachi, and Nokia, where he specialized in ASICs.

The company operates on a fabless business model, meaning it designs the chips but outsources the manufacturing, packaging, and testing to third-party foundries like TSMC. Ensilica's expertise lies in creating complex mixed-signal ASICs, which integrate both analog and digital functions onto a single chip. These custom chips offer benefits such as reduced power consumption, smaller product size, and enhanced effectiveness, which are critical for specialized applications where standard off-the-shelf components are not suitable. The company's business model transitioned from consultancy to a fabless design and supply model in 2016, allowing it to generate recurring revenue from chip sales in addition to non-recurring engineering fees for design services.

Ensilica serves a diverse international client base across the automotive, industrial, healthcare, and communications markets. It is an approved supplier to major automotive and industrial OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers. The company has a portfolio of intellectual property (IP) in cryptography, radar, and communications systems. A significant milestone was achieved when the company shipped over 10 million ASICs for a premium automotive manufacturer, a program that began in 2018. Ensilica became a public company in May 2022, floating on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange.
