EnerPure

EnerPure is a Canadian cleantech company that has developed a patented technology for recycling used motor oil (UMO) into a high-quality, low-carbon marine fuel. Founded in 2009 by Todd Habicht in Winnipeg, the company was originally named HD-Petroleum. The technology was initially a prototype developed by Todd's grandfather, Bernard George Habicht, who was also the inventor of the rotary combine. Todd Habicht recognized the global potential of the technology, turning the backyard project into a commercially proven and patented process.

The company's core business revolves around deploying modular, micro-scale recycling plants that are significantly less capital-intensive than traditional re-refining solutions, costing about 5% of the capex. This modular design allows for localized recycling, bringing the solution directly to the source of the waste oil and reducing collection costs. EnerPure's patented three-phase process involves pre-treatment and dehydration to remove contaminants, followed by thermal cracking and distillation to produce marine distillate fuel. The resulting fuel is compliant with the ISO 8217 standard and has a sulphur content below 0.1%, with a carbon intensity 14.6% lower than comparable petroleum-based marine fuels.

EnerPure operates on a business model of building and operating these recycling plants. Its revenue is generated from the sale of the produced marine fuel. The company has proven its technology through a pilot plant in Southern Manitoba, which processed 1.6 million litres of UMO and sold over 1.2 million litres, validating market demand. Key customers include Maersk, the world's largest container shipping company, through an off-take agreement with Elbow River Marketing, a subsidiary of Parkland Corporation. The company has received funding from investors such as Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), Green Union Capital, and Cliffbrake, raising over $11.2 million.
