In 1922, Edward D. Jones Sr. opened a single-room office in St. Louis with a simple idea: treat associates like partners and clients with fairness. This principle laid the groundwork for a financial services firm that would take a distinctly different path. While most brokerages focused on urban centers, the founder's son, Edward "Ted" Jones Jr., saw an untapped market. After joining the firm in 1948, Ted pioneered a new model. He began selling securities from the trunk of his car to farmers and small-town residents, recognizing their financial needs were just as important as those of city dwellers. The pivotal moment came in 1957 with the opening of the first branch office in Mexico, Missouri. This established the firm's signature one-broker office strategy, designed to bring "Wall Street to Main Street." This hyper-local approach fostered deep client relationships and became the engine of the company's growth. A significant structural decision was made to keep the company a private partnership, owned by its employees and retirees. This move reinforced the founder's original vision, aligning the interests of the firm with its clients, rather than outside shareholders. The company has never held an IPO and remains privately owned. By 1980, the firm had expanded to over 300 offices and began moving into suburban and urban markets, proving the model's appeal was universal. Today, Edward Jones is a Fortune 500 company with over 15,000 locations across North America, still operating on the foundational belief that financial advice should be personal and accessible to all.
