Food industry redistribution services for streamlined supply chains. MoreLess

In 1960, in the small town of Mt. Sterling, Illinois, Robert and Dorothy Tracy decided to tackle a problem in the food industry. With eight children at home, they started Associated Dairy Products, initially operating out of their family station wagon. Their goal was to help food suppliers increase sales and give customers better access to products. The business wasn't just another distributor. Robert and Dorothy pioneered a new model: food redistribution. They bought products in full truckloads from manufacturers, broke them down, and sold them in smaller, more manageable less-than-truckload (LTL) quantities to a wide range of distributors who couldn't handle massive orders. This innovation solved a major inefficiency in the supply chain. The company, renamed Dot Foods in 1981 in honor of Dorothy, grew steadily. Instead of pursuing an IPO or external funding, the Tracys focused on building a lasting family enterprise. Leadership passed from Robert and Dorothy to their children beginning in 1985, a transition few family businesses survive. Today, Dot Foods is the largest food redistributor in North America, still privately owned and operated by the Tracy family, with the third generation now involved in the business.
