Delivery Club
eCommerce & Marketplaces · Krasnodar, Russia · Founded 2009
A Russian online food delivery marketplace MoreLess
Delivery Club, established in 2009 by co-founders Levon Oganesyan and Anna Shkirina, is a major player in Russia's food and grocery delivery market. Oganesyan's venture into the industry was sparked when a restaurateur friend sought his help in setting up a delivery service, revealing to him a significant gap in the market. Starting with a small office and just two operators, the company was launched with an initial investment from its founders.
The company's initial business model was a marketplace, aggregating restaurants that managed their own deliveries. Revenue was generated through a 10% commission from partner restaurants for orders placed through the platform. A significant pivot occurred in 2016 with the introduction of its own logistics service, initially covering central Moscow. This enabled Delivery Club to serve restaurants lacking their own courier fleets and expand its service offerings. Over time, the company broadened its scope beyond restaurant meals to include groceries, pharmaceuticals, pet supplies, and other retail goods. By April 2022, it had also entered the B2B logistics sector, providing express delivery services for major retail companies.
Delivery Club has undergone several major ownership changes throughout its history. In 2014, the German food delivery company Foodpanda acquired 100% of its shares. Subsequently, in 2016, Mail.ru Group (now VK) purchased the service for $100 million. A major strategic shift happened in 2019 when Delivery Club became part of a joint O2O (online-to-offline) venture created by Mail.ru Group and Sberbank, aimed at dominating the food and transport markets. The final significant ownership transfer occurred in September 2022, when Yandex acquired Delivery Club from VK as part of a cashless asset swap, which saw VK taking over Yandex's News and Zen platforms. Following the acquisition, Yandex began integrating the service with its own Yandex Eats platform, and in June 2023, the service was rebranded to "Market Delivery" before being shortened to simply "Delivery" in November 2023.
The service operates through its mobile applications (for iOS and Android) and website, allowing users to order from a vast network of restaurants and stores. Customers can filter options by delivery time, ratings, and special offers. The platform's IT infrastructure is built on a microservices architecture, designed to handle high-volume traffic and aggregate data from numerous services into simplified endpoints for a seamless user experience. The company also provides a full suite of applications for customers, drivers, and restaurants, facilitating real-time order tracking and management.
